| | 11-11-2008 - Missing Server Memory Recently I discovered that my server wasn't using all 4 Gigs of memory. It was only using 1 Gig. Using the free -m commmand I was able to see that only 885 megs of memory was showing up. So I drove to the co-location and opened up the server. 4 Gigs were still in the server, but only 1 Gig was being used by the operating system. In my pursuit, I came across this link on Got more than a gig of RAM and 32-bit Linux? Here's how to use it. I suspect this is the problem. Now for the dangerous part. It requires me to recompile the kernel. I've only done this once before, and only on a development machine. Never on a live.
Pfhewww, that was quick. I used the apt-get command to install a new pre-compiled kernel and it worked flawless. Less then a minute later I rebooted the machine. The correct memory showed up and my database was tons faster.
